RICHMOND JUNIOR CHESS CLUB BLINDFOLDED
International Chess Master Gavin Wall was blindfolded before challenging 11 of Richmond Borough's brightest young chess prospects to a blindfold simultaneous chess match at Twickenham Preparatory School. Gavin played 11 juniors with no sight of a chess board at any time with pupils calling out their moves. Peter Sowray and James Coleman of Richmond Junior Chess Club were present to ensure accuracy and fair play. The excited youngsters were somewhat dismayed to find that Gavin was able to keep all 11 games in his head at the same time and still play to a very high standard. By the end of the evening Gavin had won 9 games, drawn 1 and lost only one match to Year 5 pupil Jamie Spillard from Twickenham Preparatory School. |
HAMPTON SCHOOL - Sunday February 7th
We had a fabulous day on Sunday - many thanks to Hampton School for providing a superb venue, to the English Primary Schools' Association (EPSCA), and to all the parents and chess-players who supported the event.
A total of 18 teams - that's 90+ players - took part in the EPSCA National Schools' Championship and a further 25 played in the UK Chess Challenge qualifier. Thanks to Marie Gallagher for the following results:-

Special mention to the following, who scored 5 out of 5: in the Under 11s Edwin Barnham (Newland House), Nicholas Dummett (Newland House) and Koh Noguchi (Marshgate) and in the Under 9s Arron Baruk (Colet Court B). The best girl scorer was Rhiannon Tanner (Trafalgar) in the Under 11s.
The Mayor of Richmond arrived for prize-giving and all those who stayed had their photos taken with her. Special thanks to Hampton School for once again hosting the tournament, and in particular Katherine Shaw (Events Co-ordinator).
There were a couple of casualties on the day, a suspected broken wrist from a Colet Court boy (we hope he's on the mend) and a "baby tooth fallout" in the UK Chess Challenge Tournament - let's hope the tooth fairy arrived Monday morning!
About 20% of the children had never taken part in a tournament before and almost all of them would like to play again! No matter what your results on the day - 1st, 3rd, 5th or last - this tournament would not happen without all of you. We hope you had a great day out, made some friends, and learnt some more about chess!
In the UK Chess Challenge Qualifier, Joshua Cavendish (U13) swept the board with a maximum possible 21 points. Many congratulations! Alongside Joshua, other players who qualified for the Megafinal were:- Junyi Hou and Michael Pettit (U15), Thushaan Rajaratnum and Edward Li (U14), Max Wood-Robinson (U13), Alexandre Blanc, Michael Nunn and Issy Warren (U13), Adrian Kozhevnikov and Isabella Mason (U11), Richard Meikle-Briggs (U10), and last but not least Tharshan Kuhendiran, Ananth Vijaykumar and Akshaya Kalai (U9)
