Dear Parents,
We want to update you on various activities relating to Richmond Junior Chess Club.
The club is now closed for the Easter holidays and will re-open on Saturday April 26th. We will then run weekly sessions until July 19th.
The Spring term was very encouraging with the Under 9 and Under 11 teams both achieving excellent results in the EPSCA (English Primary Schools’ Chess Association) competition. The Under 9s won their zone and the Under 11s came second; both teams have qualified for the national finals which take place in April and May.
We have decided to hold a one-off training session for the U9 and U11 squads on Saturday April 19th at the ETNA Centre, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. as usual. Hopefully squad members have already been advised about this, but if not could you please let me know if you would like to attend. As this session is outside the normal opening dates we are asking for a contribution of £10 per child towards the costs.
We still have a few spaces for new members. If your child is not a member and wants to join for next term, the cost is £75 for 13 sessions. We know there are a lot of alternative activities in the Summer term, so if you prefer to pay for individual sessions the charge will be £10 per session.
We will be running two blitz tournaments on the mornings of Saturday June 7th and July 5th. These will be open to members and non-members alike.
Looking a little further ahead, we are considering ways of developing the club next academic year. Specifically:
- We recognise that Saturday afternoon at the ETNA Centre is far from ideal for everyone. Whilst we will continue with these sessions, we are considering running a parallel program on a weekday evening, perhaps at another location within the Borough.
- We want to provide competitive opportunities for club members, particularly children who are now too old to play in the Under 9 or Under 11 teams. We are considering running a Saturday morning Schools League open to both primary and secondary schools.
- We would very much like to raise funds or sponsorship for the club next season. The costs of running the U9/U11 teams alone are of the order of £5,000 per annum. Most of the other (County) teams have sponsors contributing towards this cost, which reduces the burden on parents and the club. If anyone can offer help or advice in this area, it would be welcome.
We would be interested in your reaction to these ideas. Feedback welcome.
Best regards,
Peter Sowray
