Richmond Juniors Win National Schools Competition A team of young chess players representing Richmond triumphed in the English Primary Schools Chess Association Under 9 final which took place last Saturday, April 26th. Facing 16 other County teams drawn from across the country, the Richmond team scored a magnificent 29˝ points from 36 games and took the trophy a clear 4 points ahead of our nearest rivals Kent, who hosted the event at Eltham. After a sluggish start in the first round, the team moved into contention in the second round and finished superbly with 11 wins out of 12 in the final round to take the championship. The winning point was scored by our youngest player, 8 year old Elliott McCall, whose success was greeted with whoops of delight from his excited team mates! Team manager, Derek Thrumble said: “This was a brilliant effort by all the kids and a day that they will never forget”. Team coach Marie Gallagher commented “the team really knuckled down in the last round and played like pros!” The following players competed in the event:- Peter Andreev, Tarun Malhotra, Joe Benton, Paul Calderon, Will Styles, Jake Ruse, Elliott McCall, Amay Aggarwal, Hugo Till, Jake Simms, Dominic Tso, Fraser Owen, Noah Bultema, Alex Gogoladze, James Adshead and Jamie Jones. The following Richmond schools were represented:- Colet Court, Darell, Denmead, East Sheen primary, Kings House, Mall, Newland House and Trafalgar and additional players joined the squad from neighbouring London boroughs. The core of the team consists of members of Richmond Junior Chess Club, which meets every Saturday afternoon during term time. The Club hosted two special squad training sessions to prepare the team for the competition and organised practice games to select the final line up. Our next major competition will see our Under 11 team compete in the National Championships in Liverpool on May 10th. The club are interested in hearing from children in year 3 or below who are interested in chess and would like to be considered for the U9 team next year. We would also like to hear from any girls playing chess in year 5 or below interested in joined a new Richmond Girls team from September 2008.
